Keeping Chickens

This page is really here to try to help you choose a poultry uk breed.

I suppose I will take the basics and then move on.

The main reason for most of us to have chickens is to have EGGS, with this we want the added bonus of very friendly pets and as hardy as possible:

The easy choice of breeds to go for are:

Light Sussex (Utility) - Hardy bird, a must start bird for the novice. My favourite i can not recommend highly enough as a starting bird. Light Cream Eggs (and lots)
Buff Orpington - Again hardy and super friendly another great starter bird. A real treat as a family member (as it will soon become one :)) Light Cream Eggs (and very reliable layer)
Welsumer - We have two types, standard and Silver Duckwing laying beautiful eggs, sometimes a bit flighty but mainly placid. The standard Cockerel is a real stunner! Teracotta Red Eggs (a good layer)
Cuckoo Maran - Heavy layer of eggs, another great starter bird as very placid and really only interested in laying and eating. Dark Brown Eggs (again a good layer)

What next? well the above gives the perfect starter birds, very hardy and friendly and really a must for the starter, we now what to add something different a nice suprise:

Cream Legbar - Beautiful bird and stunning Blue Eggs, yes it lays blue not green tinted but beautiful blue eggs, also if you breed you can sex the chicks from day old.
French Maran - Definatley a 2005/6 and 2007 favourite already! (so says the order book) We have 2 types Copper Blue/Black amazing eggs. Hairy Legs and darkest brown eggs in the UK!
Silkies - You either love or hate them but they are different and great broodies! We offer Black, Blue, White and Gold, please please book early as we always sell out very very quickly!

So what have I missed, well:

Barnvelders, Jubliee Orpingtons, Blue Laced Wyandottes and Dorkings.
Why? - No reason all of these are stunning birds, Barnvelders lay very very well, Jubliee Orpingtons are really stunning birds and so placid, Blue Laced Wyandottes are so so placid and Dorkings is our oldest breed we should all have one to preserve the old 5 toed ones and they lay well.
